Multiplication in Year 2 begins with equal groups and repeated addition. Children need to see what a multiplication sentence means before memorising facts. Counters, cubes, drawings and everyday objects make this idea visible.

Equal groups first

Make three groups of four buttons. Count 4 + 4 + 4, then write 3 x 4. Ask what each number tells us. Arrays help children connect rows and columns to the same total.

Building confidence at home

Use short practical questions: how many socks in four pairs, or how many wheels on three toy cars? Encourage explanation rather than speed. When a child can model a situation, the symbol becomes meaningful.

Practise at home

  • Say “groups of” while the idea is new (for example, three groups of four) so the × sign keeps its meaning.
  • Spot equal groups in daily life: wheels on cars, eggs in a box, or fingers on a hand, then say how many groups and how many in each.
  • Make a simple array with buttons or coins in equal rows and read it as “__ rows of __”.
  • Ask: How many groups? How many in each? How could we add that up? Can you draw it as an array?
  • Watch for reading × as + (thinking 3 × 4 = 7). Remind them it means equal groups added together.
  • Build understanding first; speed can wait until the equal-groups idea is secure.
