A large theatre can dominate a campus tour. Seats look impressive, lighting grids glitter, and it is easy to assume performing arts must be excellent. The more useful question for parents is how drama, music, and performance actually sit in the weekly life of ordinary pupils, not only in showcase events.

Beyond the building

Ask which year groups use the theatre, how often, and for what: assemblies, curriculum drama, instrumental concerts, musicals, or community hire. A venue that is mostly empty for primary pupils tells a different story from one woven into learning.

Curriculum drama versus clubs and shows

Strong schools usually offer both: drama within the arts curriculum and optional performance pathways. Clarify whether every child experiences performance skills, or only those who audition. Inclusion matters.

What to watch during a visit

If possible, observe a rehearsal or lesson. Look for respectful direction, clear learning aims, and pupils who can explain what they are practising.
